Picking a shape you'll keep

2 min

Most people pick a shape the way they pick a New Year’s resolution: by ambition. It is the wrong input. The right input is the calendar you already have.

Which nights are already easy?

Look at an ordinary week. There are nights you drink because something is on, and nights you drink because the bottle was open and it was seven o’clock. The second kind are your first spacers. For most people those are Monday to Thursday, with Wednesday wobbling if there is a midweek thing.

Start with the easy ones. Clear nights that cost nothing are still clear nights, and they build the kept weeks that make the harder ones possible.

Which nights are not up for discussion?

Friday with the crew. Date night. The Sunday roast with your dad. Leave them out of the shape, on purpose, and do not feel bad about it. A shape with those nights in it is a shape you will break in week one, and a broken shape teaches you that you cannot do this, which is false.

What would you be happy with in four weeks?

If the honest answer is “three nights off, every week, no exceptions,” that is your shape. If it is “I don’t want to drink at all any more,” pick all seven, and know that the app treats that exactly the same way: a shape to keep, with mates who see it.

Changing it

You will. Most people widen after a month or two, when the Mon–Thu feels normal and Sunday night looks like an easy addition. Some narrow, because the first attempt was too tight. Both are fine. The kept weeks you already have do not go anywhere when the shape changes; the app judges each week against the shape that applied then.

What you are building is a week you can stand behind, not a record. Pick the one you’ll keep.
