How to say not tonight
3 min
The fear, for most people starting a shape, is the conversation. Someone hands you a beer on a Tuesday and you have to say something, and whatever you say sounds like a judgment on them.
Here is the first thing worth knowing: that conversation mostly does not happen. People who drink most nights assume everyone else does too, and they also assume nobody is paying attention, because they are not. If you have a water on a Tuesday, the usual response is nothing.
When it does come up, short works and explanations do not. A reason invites a counter. A fact closes the subject.
Lines that work
“Spacer tonight.” The best one, because it names a thing they already understand and says nothing about them.
“Early start.” True often enough.
“Had a big one Saturday.” Also true, and it puts you on their side of the ledger.
“I’m on Mon to Thu at the moment.” Specific, bounded, and it implies you’ll be drinking on Friday, which you will.
“Nah, you go.” Sometimes the whole exchange.
Lines to avoid
Anything that starts with “I’m trying to”. It sounds like a struggle and people want to help you out of a struggle, which means talking you into a drink.
Anything about health. Correct, and it makes the other person think about their own, which they will resent you for by the second beer.
Anything that ends with “you should too”. Never. The crew sees your week in the app. That is all the advocacy anyone needs.
The mate who pushes
There is sometimes one. He is not being cruel; your clear night is a mirror and he does not like the view. Two moves: hold the line without a speech, and put up a dry plan he would like. A swim, a round of golf, a cook-up at yours. Give him a way to be your mate that does not involve pouring you one.
