What four weeks does

3 min

Nobody keeps a habit for an abstract benefit. They keep it because something they can feel got better. Here is what people commonly report after four weeks of a kept shape, with the usual warning that bodies differ and none of this is a promise.

Sleep comes first. Within a week or two, the clear nights produce a different kind of sleep: later to drop off, maybe, but no 3am wake-up and no lying there. Most people notice the mornings before they notice the nights.

Then the mornings. Not hungover, because two wines was never a hangover. Just clearer and earlier. The difference between a 6am that is fine and a 6am that is a negotiation.

Weight moves slowly, if at all, in month one. Two glasses of wine a night is a lot of energy over a year, but over four weeks the scales may not say much. People who are keeping a shape for the weight tend to give up here. People who are keeping it for the sleep tend to stay, and the weight follows them later.

Mood evens out. This one is harder to describe and the most commonly mentioned. Fewer flat afternoons. Less of the low-grade irritability that nobody had connected to the night before.

Tolerance drops. The Friday drinks hit harder, which is pleasant and also a warning: the second one lands like the third used to.

What doesn’t happen

You do not become a different person. The crew does not treat you differently, mostly because they have not noticed, because you are still there on Friday. There is no rush of virtue. There is a week that went better than the last one, and then another.

Why four

Four weeks is long enough to feel the sleep and mood changes and short enough to be a single decision. At the end of it you know whether the shape fits. If it does, keep it. If it was too tight, loosen it and go again. The app counts kept weeks, not perfect runs, so a loosened shape that holds is worth more than a tight one that keeps breaking.
